Signs You Might Have Termites

Hard to spot signs there's termite activity around your home

Termites are quiet invaders, so the earliest signs often show up in subtle changes around your home. One of the most common red flags is the appearance of mud tubes. These are thin, dirt-packed tunnels running along foundations, walls, or support beams. Subterranean termites build these tubes to stay moist and protected while traveling between their colony and your home’s wood. If you spot even a small tube, it’s a strong indicator that termites are active nearby.

Another major sign is wood damage that looks hollowed, blistered, or carved in patterns. Termites eat wood from the inside out, so surfaces may appear intact while the interior is riddled with galleries. You might notice paint bubbling, floors sagging, or doors and windows suddenly becoming harder to open. These changes often happen because termites weaken the structural wood behind the scenes, causing warping or shifts in the material.

  • Discarded wings
  • Frass (termite droppings)

Finally, keep an eye out for discarded wings or swarmer activity. Especially in spring, monsoons or after rain. Termite swarmers, winged reproductives, shed their wings after finding a place to start a new colony. Piles of tiny, translucent wings near windowsills, light fixtures, or entry points are a classic sign of an infestation. You may also see frass (termite droppings), which looks like small, sand-like pellets. Any of these signs should prompt a professional inspection to prevent costly damage.

A yearly termite inspection is recommended to keep your home protected against termites. Essential Pest Control offers courtesy inspections, so schedule today! 520-886-3029. You can also set up your appointment here. Tucson Termite Control - Essential Pest Control
