Scorpion Hunting

July 17, 2023

The most common Scorpion in our region is the Bark Scorpion. This stinging insect measures between ¼”–3” in size and is a light tan. The Bark Scorpion is nocturnal and is active in Arizona year-round. Bark scorpions are a challenging pest. Despite their scary looks and potent sting, they can be controlled.

Weather Condition

The best time to hunt for Scorpions is when it’s nice and warm out. The great thing about Scorpions being nocturnal is that it gives us a time of day to look for them. Though you may still see them during the day, they are more common at night.

What Gear You’ll Need

The most important piece of gear you’ll need is a black light. Scorpions will glow in the dark with the use of an ultraviolet (black light) flashlight. Second, you will need close-toed shoes. Remember, you’re hunting the Scorpion, not the other way around. The last thing you want is to be stung. So, make sure to ditch the flip-flops and put on sneakers.

The fluorescent glow of Scorpions under a black light is caused by the proteins on the outer layer of their exoskeleton.

Where to look when you’re Scorpion hunting

Scorpions don’t go too far of a distance from their homes. However, they love hiding. Scorpions are usually found close to the exterior of structures. Unfortunately, this makes it that much easier for them to enter your home or business.

Now what?

If you’re looking to keep this pest out, you’ll have to stop it in its tracks. Having a regular Pest Control service is a necessity. Scorpions eat smaller insects. Therefore, having a regular Pest Control to keep other insects out is ideal. Essential Pest Management can solve any difficult Scorpion problem by utilizing our Power Pest Program.
