Do Crane Flies Eat Mosquitoes?

December 24, 2023

They catch you by surprise and make you itch!  Mosquitoes can be quite a nuisance.  However, Crane Flies can NOT help reduce the appearance of this pest around your home.

Crane Flies, also known as Mosquito Hawks, can grow to be 2 inches long.  Due to their resemblance, they are often mistaken for being Mosquitoes.  On the contrary, they are not.  Crane Flies are often mistaken for being bigger Mosquitoes, but they are actually a different species.  They do not feed upon people either.  In fact, they don’t eat at all once they become adults.

Although this pest is not harmful, they can be bothersome. Crane Flies are attracted to light structures.  Therefore, any lights next to door ways or windows should be kept screened or closed.  Crane Flies are most common in the Spring and Summer months.
