Bed Bugs: Where they are, why they stay!

December 12, 2023

When your home becomes infested with bed bugs, it isn’t because you did anything wrong. These tiny vampires really are out to get you. It isn’t bad luck, and it doesn’t mean your home is dirty. Bed bugs naturally feed on human blood, which is why they’re attracted to our body heat and breath.

Still, you may be wondering just how it is that bed bugs managed to get into your home. This is a common question, and fortunately there are many answers.

Where do bed bugs come from?

Bed bugs are the world’s greatest hitchhikers. These bloodsucking pests travel by latching onto the fabric of clothing, but they can also travel on anything that contains fabric such as backpacks, purses, and suitcases. Wherever the fabric goes, the bug goes. Common places where bed bugs can grab onto you include:

  • Hotel rooms
  • Visiting guests
  • Public transportation
  • Used furniture
  • Movie theaters
  • Rental cars

Bed bugs are incredibly small, which is what makes them so difficult to spot in fabric and carpets. If you set your clothing onto a hotel bed or used furniture, they can creep out and hang onto your shirt or pant fibers until you get home. From there, they multiply. The average female bedbug can lay up to 200 eggs during her life cycle.

Why won’t bed bugs go away?

Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to get rid of. Because of their tiny size, they can often go unnoticed until you have an awful bed bug control problem. Like most insects, they can squeeze their body into tiny crevices and cracks, including electrical outlets. That makes it incredibly difficult to kill all of them.

As soon as you recognize these tiny brown and red pests, it’s important that you take measures as quickly as possible. However, you have to approach bed bug control correctly or else these bugs will only come back to haunt you — Or rather bite you.

Unfortunately, the more popular chemicals and pesticides that kill common household pests don’t work as well for bed bug control. Bed bugs are immune to pyrethroids and neonicotinoids, which are present in many over the counter bed bug sprays. Ask your pest control service what chemicals they use to get rid of bed bugs, and consider hiring pest control services immediately to destroy them for you. When it comes to out of control bed bugs, the DIY route is never the right approach.

Bed bugs can take weeks to get rid of and during that time your pest control company will most likely make multiple stops to your house for treatment. It’s important that you call professionals in the case of a bed bug infestation. Even the presence of one female bed bug can be enough to begin the infestation all over again if you missed them with your DIY pest bomb.
