3 Signs of Termites and & 3 Ways To Prevent Them

November 11, 2023

Termites are discovered in more than 5 million homes on average each year in the United States. NPMA estimates termite damage costs U.S. homeowners $5 billion each year. You may have heard this saying before this before.. It’s not if, but when will you have termites. Here are three signs of termites.

1. Mud Tubes

Mainly subterranean termites construct tunnels made of wood, soil and saliva along walls, on plumbing and across crawl spaces to move between their nests and food sources. If you see pencil diameter-sized track marks, that’s a sure sign termites are feasting on your house.

2. Damaged Wood

Termites excavate in channels as they crawl along the wood, creating galleys or tunnels in the wood

3. Swarming or Live Insects

Certain members of a termite colony grow wings and fly away, doing reconnaissance for new nesting sites. This is very common during monsoon season. If you see their discarded wings, they have found a site for a new colony and action must be taken quickly to prevent infestation. Termites look like marching grains of rice.

Ways to help prevent termites

1. Minimize the Use of Mulch

Wood chips, pine straw and other wood-based mulch traps moisture and creates a haven for termites and other pests, like centipedes, earwigs and ants. Consider replacing it with synthetic materials or stones. Keep all ground covering at least 15 inches from the foundation.

2. Keep Wood and Debris Away from the House

Termites are looking for water and wood, so when firewood gets wet it becomes a termite paradise. Keep your firewood at least 20 feet from the house and if possible, at least five inches off the ground.

3. Get a Home Inspection

A pest control company can assess your home for termites and other pests. If there is any reason to suspect your home might become infested, Essential Pest Control is here to help with either the common liquid treatment or the green option of the Sentricon bait system.
